What is growth factor injection therapy for hair loss?
Your blood is full of countless healing components that jump into action to promote blood flow and stimulate healing at the cellular level anytime you have an injury. The purpose of growth factor injection for hair loss is to recreate these beneficial processes by extracting healing compounds from your blood.
During PRP processing, an activation of platelet alpha-granules releases numerous growth factors. These powerful components activate stem cells in hair follicles and promote new blood vessel growth. As blood flow to follicles improves over time, follicles “awaken” and begin to grow naturally.
How effective is platelet-rich plasma therapy for hair loss?
Platelet-rich therapy for hair loss has been heavily researched for its efficacy over the years. In a 2016 study published in the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery journal, researchers identified the beneficial effect PRP has on alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.
During the randomized double-blind study, patients received PRP injections on one-half of each of their heads, followed by placebo injections on the other half of their heads. Each participant underwent three of these treatments, each spaced one month apart.
Six months after the first PRP therapy session, researchers observed a significant difference in mean anagen (actively growing) hairs, as well as improved hair density on the PRP treated sides of each patient’s head. Researchers were able to conclude that PRP has a positive effect on alopecia and could be considered a beneficial treatment for hair loss.
How many PRP therapy hair restoration treatments do I need?
Texas Hair Restoration Center provides PRP therapy hair restoration treatments for anyone struggling with hair loss or thinning hair. Depending on your level of hair loss and how quickly your hair grows, Dr. Pearce usually recommends a series of three PRP treatments — based on the previously mentioned research study.
Each PRP therapy session needs to be about four to six weeks apart. To promote ongoing hair growth and to lower your risk of hair loss, Dr. Pearce encourages you to come in to Texas Hair Restoration Center two or three times per year for maintenance PRP hair restoration treatments.
