Hair Transplants

Hair Today….

Hair Tomorrow

There’s a basic premise of a hair transplant: we take hair from one part of your body where you have plenty of hair and then move it to an area where you are lacking hair. This can be done in three different ways.

(Oh……….and once we take the hair from one area it doesn’t grow back in the old area)

1) Follicular Unit Transplantation (aka Strip Hair Transplant)

This is the original method of doing a hair transplant and is still done today for specific patients. The procedure involves making an incision in the safe zone of the donor area on the back of the scalp and then removing a long strip of tissue that contains the hair follicles that we plan to process. These sorted and processed grafts are then transplanted to your scalp where more hair is needed. This method has it’s pro’s and con’s:

Benefits of Strip Hair Transplants

  • This procedure is great for people that don’t have a wide donor area available. It helps to preserve the donor area as the scar is limited to a small area and very few hairs outside the donor strip are affected.

  • If you need a large number of grafts to get a good result, then the strip procedure is a good option for you as well. The reason this works so well is because the strip procedure allows us to get a larger number of grafts in a smaller area. It also allows us to come back to that area and do another strip procedure later on to obtain more grafts in a smaller area if a second procedure is needed. In the long run it helps preserve your donor area for future use. Once you have had multiple strip procedures you can switch to FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and have even more grafts available to you.

How Does A Hair Transplant Work?

Downside of Strip Hair Transplants

  • The scar: Unfortunately with any hair transplant there is going to be a scar. But here’s the thing with the FUT scar: It doesn’t have to be noticeable. Dr Pearce uses a technique called Tricophytic closure to help the scar heal as well as possible and help it to hide itself as it heals. With this closure technique, the hairs near the scar grow up through the scar helping it to blend in and be less noticeable. However some people wear their hair very short and the FUT scar will then be visible.

  • Longer recovery: The Strip Hair Transplant has a longer recovery compared to FUE. The reason being is that there is a full length incision across the back of the head that needs to heal and surgical incisions take a full 6 weeks to heal. Dr Pearce asks that his patients refrain from any strenuous activity or heavy lifting for about 4 to 5 weeks before getting back into regular exercise after a strip procedure. The sutures from the strip procedure are removed about 2 weeks after surgery and then need about another 4 weeks to completely heal.

2) Manual Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

What is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

FUE is an advanced hair transplant method that involves extracting individual hair follicles directly from the donor area and transplanting them to the recipient area. Unlike traditional methods, FUE leaves no linear scars, providing a more discreet and natural-looking outcome.

Benefits of FUE:

  • Minimally Invasive: FUE requires no surgical incisions or stitches, minimizing discomfort and downtime.

  • No Visible Scarring: Say goodbye to linear scars—FUE leaves tiny, less than 1 mm sized circular scars that are almost imperceptible after they heal.

  • Quicker Recovery: Patients typically experience faster healing and recovery compared to Strip Hair Transplants. FUE patients are typically back to regular activities and the gym after post op day 10.

Downside of FUE:

  • Uses more of the Donor Area: With FUE, most people will be able to have 2 to 3 FUE procedures before their donor area is depleted. This is because the scarring is spread so wide and the overall density of the entire donor area is affected every time a hair transplant is done.

  • Requires more surgical skill: FUE is not something that a surgeon has the innate ability to do on the first day. It takes time to hone the skills needed for FUE.

  • Longer harvesting times: Since each individual hair is being harvested, it takes more time to harvest the total number of grafts need for your hair transplant.

How Does FUE Work?

During an FUE procedure, Dr Pearce uses a small punch tool to extract individual follicular units from the donor area, usually located at the back or sides of the scalp. These healthy grafts are then meticulously transplanted into the recipient site, creating a seamless and harmonious hairline.

3) The ARTAS iXi

What is Robotic Hair Transplantation?

Robotic hair restoration is the latest advancement in the evolution of hair transplantation. The ARTAS iXi is the latest version of The ARTAS and Dr Pearce is thrilled to have it here in his office to offer to his patients. The ARTAS iXi uses three cameras that updates the robots location up to 60 times per second to ensure the highest accuracy when harvesting. This accuracy allows the robot to be fast so you spend less time in the chair.

Who is a good candidate for the ARTAS?

Since Dr Pearce was the first hair transplant surgeon to bring the ARTAS to Austin in 2019, he is also the most experienced in using it here in Austin. Over these years he has set strict criteria for patients who are and are not candidates for using the ARTAS iX.

Dr Pearce prefers his patients to not have previous hair transplants, have good density in the donor area and also have a wide enough donor area to make the use of the robot in the best interest of his patients.

Can the ARTAS iXi make sites in the recipient area?

The ARTAS iXi can also make sites in the frontal scalp region, however it is not capable of working on the crown for site making at this time.

So which type of hair

transplant is right for me?

That’s a GREAT question! The best way to find that out is to set up a consultation with Dr Pearce so that he can discuss with you your options based on the degree of hair loss you are experiencing and what your donor area is like.

Unfortunately, one size does not fit all when it comes to hair transplants.

Dr Pearce is happy to meet with you in person or via video conference if you live outside the Austin area.
